Nursery Class
Lauren Haynes – Nursery Class Teacher
Nikki Thomas – Nursery Nurse

Welcome back, we hope you have had a wonderful Christmas break. We are looking forward to an exciting Spring Term in the Nursery class! This letter is to outline some of the learning planned for the Spring Term and some suggestions of how you can help at home.

In phonics we are continuing to listen to sounds and talk about the sounds that we hear. We will begin to learn about rhythm, rhyme and alliteration. We will be reading rhyming books, thinking about rhyming words and learning to identify initial sounds.

How you can help:

  • Reading a range of books including some rhyming books
  • When reading rhyming books, encourage your child to join in with rhyming words as you read
  • Sing songs and nursery rhymes
  • Listening to and identify sounds around the house and outside.

In maths we are continuing to learn about numbers. This will include learning how to recognise numbers, sequence numbers, count, match quantity to number and solve number problems. We will also continue to explore shapes, space and measure.

How you can help:

  • Talk to your child about different numbers in the environment such as the numbers on buses or number plates
  • Count with your child and help them to touch an object as they say a number
  • Sing number songs with your child
  • Talk to your child about the shapes of different items at home and in the environment
  • Play online games:

In literacy we will be reading a range of books and we will base our learning on these books.  We will be starting with ‘The Ginger Bread Man’. After this, we will choose books based on what the children are interested in. If your child is particularly interested in something, please let us know.

WHY IS READING A SCHOOL FOCUS?

The school needs to raise each child’s attainment in reading.  Our children need to develop wider skills to meet the national expectations of primary reading. We are focusing on developing each child’s knowledge of words, as well as supporting them to understand what they are reading, through questions. WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH THIS!  Your child will choose their own reading book. Please ensure that you read with your child at least three times a week, discuss their book and sign their reading journal every time you read together.

Watch out for parent reading workshops to show you how to support your child with reading.

Crescent Literacy

There will be four Crescent Literacy workshops in Spring Term. This is a chance for you to come into class and support your child’s learning with different fun activities. More information about Crescent Literacy workshops will be sent out to you at a later date.

Open Mornings

Parents will be invited in to class to look at their child’s learning journey and join in with their child’s learning and play. We will send out allocated slots at a later date.

Tapestry

Please check Tapestry regularly as observations are updated all the time. Over the term you can add your own pictures of your child via your smart phone or tablet. Please see a member of staff if you need any help with logging in or getting a profile.

Thank you for your support,

Lauren and Nikki
